JPG Compress 20KB — Photo and Image Online (India Guide)

Tool: Image Compressor to 20KB

Twenty kilobytes is small enough that every step before compression matters more than the compression itself. I built the 20KB preset because government and exam portals in India still enforce it — especially on signature fields — and because the support emails all sounded the same: "It says under 20KB but won't accept."

This is the workflow I send back. For why rejections happen when size is already correct, read Why 20KB photos get rejected.

Minute 0–2: Read the form literally

Before opening any tool, copy these lines from the upload page into Notes:

  • Maximum file size (20KB? below 20KB?)
  • Required format (JPG/JPEG almost always)
  • Width × height in pixels if shown
  • Which field — photo, signature, or thumb impression

SSC, state PSC, and railway forms often put 20KB on signatures and a higher cap on photos in the same application. Compressing both to 20KB is a common mistake.

Minute 2–8: Prepare the source JPG

For signatures

  1. Black or dark blue pen on white paper — no ruled lines visible if avoidable.
  2. Photograph flat, phone parallel to paper, even light.
  3. Crop so ink fills ~70% of frame width; thin white margin on all sides.
  4. Export as JPG if your editor saved PNG.

Image Compressor to 20KB

For photos (only when the field cap is actually 20KB)

  1. Plain background, face straight to camera.
  2. Crop passport-style — head and shoulders only.
  3. If the same form allows 50KB or 100KB on the photo field, use that instead.

Minute 8–10: Compress once

  1. Upload cropped original — not a previous attempt.
  2. Download output.
  3. File properties: size ≤ 20KB (strict portals reject 21KB).
  4. Full zoom: ink strokes continuous for signatures; eyes identifiable for photos.

If rejected, check format and pixels before re-compressing. See rejection guide above.

Minute 10–12: Upload and verify preview

  • Photo in photo slot, signature in signature slot.
  • Portal preview not stretched or blank.
  • Save confirmation PDF or screenshot until admit card generates.

Portal patterns (India, 2026)

Form family 20KB typical use Photo cap (often higher)
SSC / CHSL Signature 20–50KB photo — read notice
Railway RRB Signature ~50KB photo
State TET / PSC Signature or thumb 50–100KB photo
Scholarship (older portals) Both photo and sig at 20KB rare — verify PDF

When photo and signature share 20KB, prepare them with different crops — never the same file twice.

Format path to 20KB JPG

You have Do this
Camera JPG Crop → 20KB tool
PNG scan PNG to JPG → crop → 20KB
WEBP WEBP to JPG → crop → 20KB
PDF scan of signature Export page as JPG first, then crop

Troubleshooting without panic

File 18KB, still rejected
→ Wrong format (PNG extension), wrong dimensions, or corrupted upload. Re-export JPG, match pixels, try different browser.

Signature looks grey after 20KB
→ Retake with darker pen and tighter crop. Compression cannot darken faint ink.

Photo looks like a mosaic at 20KB
→ Field may allow more than 20KB. Re-read the form. Switch to 50KB or 100KB if allowed.

Compressed twice, looks worse
→ Stop. Original only, one pass.
